Today we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
God is perfect, holy and just. He must punish sin or rebellion. But He is also merciful and loving.
God created us and to give and receive love from us He gave the first man, Adam a choice to obey God or not. Love is not an emotion. It is a choice.
Adam chose to disobey and willfully rebelled. God’s punishment is death and separation from Him. Adam’s choice caused everyone in his blood line to have that same curse of death.
But God.. because He is merciful needed a way to redeem us but no man could ever satisfy His Holiness. Instead He took our place and was born of a virgin and became man (Jesus).
Jesus did not have Adam’s sin nature because He was not from Adam’s blood line. He was able to live a perfect life according to God’s standard of the 10 commandments.
He was wrongfully beaten and crucified and died on the cross as the sacrifice in our place. Because Jesus was God He was able to take God’s Wrath upon Himself in our place. Because He was God He was able to bring Himself back to life conquering death.
What Jesus did was an actual legal transaction much like what we see in our courts today. We are guilty of breaking God’s law but cannot pay the fine. God in His mercy provided Himself as the substitute in our place. Jesus paid our fine and we are now free. The only thing we need to do is accept this. We do this by acknowledging that we have broken the law and put our faith and trust in Jesus.
This is why we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus today. He has paid our debt by dying on the cross in our place. What could be more joyful of an event to celebrate than that?
Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
